Global Diversity

Diversity evolved as international businesses expanded and our technology on the electronic highway, the Internet, improved so agreement would be reached with George Siemens. Today, I watched as a friend was texted from Europe to be informed that the Euro train system was down due to bad weather. As they messaged and talked to each other, I realized that up to the minute updates were possible on road conditions and other transportation problems in Great Britain and all of Europe.
Diversity must be accepted by the educational technologist. Age, gender, level of education, socioeconomic status, and learning style in the past were considered as a part of instructional design. As we move into the future and in industry, we must include culture and language to be successful. (McLaren, 2007) “Theorists have now begun to consider that culture (and language) may play a greater role in the conveyance of knowledge than previously thought. Because knowledge is socially mediated, and socialization is grounded in culture (and language), it follows that education is seen not as a process of conveying knowledge, but as a as a co-construction of education
within sociocultural (and sociolinguistic) contexts”. (Thomas, Mitchell, &
Joseph, 2002). We are no longer just an English speaking country but a multicultural planet with different languages and cultures. We must design and implement technologies that embrace other cultures and languages to encompass diversity, not only within this country but globally. There is growing need to incorporate our education into an international collaborative endeavor, as stated by http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/worldview/091105/education-economic-crisis-g20-commerce
